Google Keyword Planner : Keywords Research To Get More Traffic

Alright, first of all, Google has an algorithm which finds the most suitable content related to a search and displays it on top. It means that your content shall have the right keywords to occupy the top position on Google Search and you cannot pay Google and ask them to put your content on top. It is all automatic and and you just need to put up quality content to get on top. Researching keywords is therefore a crucial step in the process.

Here is one question you should ask yourself – “Even though I’m writing quality content, why I’m unable to drive enough traffic from search engine?” The reason is that you are not using the right keywords or making it hard for the algorithm to detect your content.

WHAT IS KEYWORD RESEARCH?

Well, this is a self-explanatory term. It means researching for trending keywords that you may use while writing your content. It is important to select the right keywords and use them to come under the spotlight of Google algorithm.
Now for example, lets say that you have used a keyword – “Best Keyword Tools” in your blog and you still don’t get the desired amount of traffic. This is because more people have used that keyword and hence you don’t get much traffic.
The thing is, you need to use a keyword that drives a lot of traffic and comes with a less competition.
In simple words, use a keyword that is not used by much people but it drives a lot of traffic. By doing a complete keyword search, you will be able to find keywords that drive the right amount of traffic.
In this post, we discuss about Google Keyword Planner and how you can use it to get the right keywords and get more traffic.

GOOGLE KEYWORD PLANNER

Google Keyword Planner is an official product developed by Google. Using this tool, you can research on your competitors’ keywords and also find out which keywords rank the best.
You need to have an Adwords account to start using this tool. Don’t worry, your existing G-mail account will work. Just navigate to Keyword Planner and follow the on-screen instructions to start using it. You need to provide your site address and language preferences.

Now, there are three types of searches in Google Keyword Planner: Broad, Exact and Phrase.
  • Broad – Use this option if you don’t want the exact keyword that you searched for. This will display some keywords that match your search and also some more related to it.
  • Exact This will display the exact keywords that you searched for and only show keywords from that niche.
  • Phrase – Phrase is used when you need keywords in an exact phrase. For example: Lets consider the keyword –  “Best Keyword Research”. Keyword position won’t be changing, but it gives the data for traffic, that your Keyword might be getting for phrase search

Just use any one of the above options for your research. You can also add more filters to your search including language and searches for a keyword in a particular region.

Here are a few columns that I must tell you about:

Competition – One myth about this tool is that competition field doesn’t show how hard and easy it’s to rank for that keyword. In fact, it shows the competition among advertisers bidding on that keyword.

Global monthly search – Global monthly search shows the average of searches in last 12 months globally.

Local monthly search – It shows the search volume based on your filter.

Approximate CPC – This column shows CPC (Cost Per Click) for an advertiser. Many SEO experts recommend to use this column to find AdSense CPC keywords. Its a good idea to pick high CPC keywords, where advertisers are bidding more but with low competition.

Conclusion

Never forget that Keyword research is just a primary step to increase your traffic, ultimately,  you will have to create quality content. Moreover, never try to get traffic on the wrong keyword, as it will affect your overall blog performance.

For your old blog articles, if you have not optimized them for any Keyword, you can use Google analytic data, any software for Keyword research and work on re-optimization for Keyword.
